JiWire selects mobile advertising veteran Steve Ricketts as MD for Europe

JiWire selects mobile advertising veteran Steve Ricketts as MD for Europe

LONDON, 5 October, 2011 - JiWire, the leading location-based media company reaching the on-the-go audience, today announced it has selected mobile advertising veteran, Steve Ricketts, to be the new European Managing Director. Ricketts brings experience in launching the first mobile advertising into the UK for a mobile operator whilst at Orange, now Everything Everywhere, as well as developing mobile payment and location based services. Most recently he worked as a consultant specialising in mobile strategy integration and execution for companies as well as voluntary work for UNICEF. Reporting to JiWire's Executive Team in San Francisco, he will be responsible for growing the European operation including developing new and existing strategic partnerships and building the team for Europe.

Ricketts will aggressively extend JiWire's leadership position in Location-Based advertising. He has been working in the mobile media sector since 2005, when he launched mobile advertising and sponsored search, spearheaded mobile payment, developed partnerships and mobile enablers across sales promotion, location, text services and apps. He co-founded the IAB's mobile steering group in 2008, which brought the mobile operators together with other industry players such as MediaCom to accelerate the understanding and adoption of mobile advertising. He also played an active part in other industry initiatives including the GSMA and as a founding member of the Mobile Commerce Joint Industry Committee (MCJIC) to drive the growth of m-commerce through research, market intelligence and development of best practice. Ricketts has also been in the digital sector since 1997 in start-up, SME and corporate businesses.

JiWire has rapidly expanded its UK business enabling location-based advertising across both mobile applications and public Wi-Fi, helping advertisers and their agencies reach the growing 'On-The-Go' audience on all mobile devices, including laptops, smartphones and tablets. Advertising can be targeted at the point of connection by geo-location, venue type, and by device. JiWire's Compass advertising platform helps brands engage with their customers by providing location-based information when they are near a store, such as product availability, real time in-stock information, and directions to any place where that advertiser's products are sold. In May the company raised $20 million in Series C funding and announced this would be used to extend JiWire's leadership position in location-based advertising, including further international expansion.

Commenting on the appointment, Dave Courtney, CEO at JiWire explains, "We chose Steve as our new European MD because of his extensive experience in mobile and location-based advertising. We are in a period of high growth, leveraging location to transform advertising and mobile as we know it today; therefore it is critical to bring on someone who knows the ecosystem intimately and has the relationships to accelerate the growth of our UK business. A skilled commercial operator, Steve has worked in large and small companies, in publishing, retail and mobile, and has a strong understanding of the importance of mobile data, which is ultimately, the foundation of our business."

Steve Ricketts, European Managing Director of JiWire, adds, "Location-based marketing is one of the oldest forms of traditional advertising and integral across out of home and broadcast media. But lack of scale has held it back within the digital and mobile sectors until now with changing consumer behaviour and the latest technology. I am excited about joining JiWire as the company offers the scale, critical mass in terms of reach and compelling consumer and advertiser experiences to deliver on that promise. I am looking forward to growing the business including integrating location and mobile to deliver 'LoMoCo' (Local Mobile Commerce) and contextual on-the-go advertising solutions."

Having established JiWire's UK operation and validated the market proposition, the appointment sees JiWire's existing Joint Managing Directors for Europe, Peter Jones and Mark Hindmarsh, move into an advisory capacity to continue to focus on specific partnership strategy, platform development and strategic advertising programs. Peter Jones, explains, "We feel the business is now ready for a seasoned leader coming from within the mobile industry. Steve's appointment completes our initial role of establishing JiWire in Europe and enables Mark Hindmarsh and I to step back from the day-to-day operations of the business while continuing to leverage our industry relationships and market expertise to further its success."

JiWire has monetised Wi-Fi audiences since 2003, serving 45 million unique users per month across over 250,000 mobile applications and public Wi-Fi venue locations in the UK and US. JiWire launched into Europe in 2010 working with leading wireless network providers to increase the available inventory that JiWire can offer its advertisers, which range from automotive and B2B companies to consumer electronics, finance, entertainment, and travel brands.

Recent research from JiWire discovered that 69 per cent of the on-the-go audience in the UK is willing to share their location to receive more relevant content. As people become increasingly mobile, they are looking for more relevant content and deals at their fingertips and 52 per cent of those surveyed expect to use their mobile device more for shopping this Christmas. More than half plan to compare prices and research or read reviews on products before purchasing.

ip.access partners with Acme Packet for small cell solutions

BEDFORD, MA, OCTOBER 3, 2011—Acme Packet® (NASDAQ:APKT), the leader in session delivery network solutions, today announced a new partnership with ip.access, a leading provider of picocell and femtocell infrastructure solutions. The companies will collaborate on small cell solutions and ip.access will integrate and support the Net-Net® Security Gateway to secure the ip.access nano3G small cell system.

Small cells, including femtocells and picocells, are indoor cellular base stations that extend the reach and improve the performance of mobile voice and data services. They are designed to improve the customer experience for consumer, enterprise and public space environments, while offloading the more costly macro radio and backhaul networks. The small cell architecture uses the Internet to connect the small cell access point to the mobile core network.

This new partnership integrates the Net-Net® Security Gateway as part of the ip.access nano3G femtocell and picocell solution. The Net-Net Security Gateway fulfills the security gateway functional requirements defined in the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), providing authentication and IPsec tunnel management between the ip.access nano3G Access Points and the Access Controller. IPsec tunnels protect all subscriber voice and data traffic and the management packets from tampering, eavesdropping or interception. The two companies have worked together to enhance reliability, security and manageability of small cells. The turnkey solution has been tested and is deployed in live customer networks.

The Acme Packet Net-Net Security Gateway features several significant technical advantages that maximize capacity, minimize costs and assure service availability. It provides up to 200,000 IPsec tunnels with high-performance IPsec processing architecture in a single rack unit system, providing cost effective scalability as services expand. It features integrated hardware- and software-based DoS/DDoS attack protection and carrier-class high availability to protect the network and service up-time.

ip.access has more than 60 customers for its 3G and 2G small cell solutions, and its femtocell technology is deployed in more than 500,000 small cell access points in homes, offices and mobile network hotspots worldwide. Infonetics Research recently reported that ip.access has the leading market share of femtocell units deployed and ABI Research ranks the company as the leading picocell supplier in the world.

The nano3G femtocell and picocell solution is optimized for residential, enterprise and public hotspot deployments, supporting open access, bi-directional handover with the macro network and active alarms. The Access Controller scales from a few hundred access points to mass market residential volumes. Plug-and-play customer installation and IP backhaul make nano3G a highly cost-effective solution for coverage and capacity challenges, while full 3GPP standards compliance provides flexibility and interoperability with third party components.

“Service providers demand a comprehensive security solution in order to successfully deploy small cells,” said Dr. Andy Tiller, senior vice president of product strategy and marketing at ip.access. “We have partnered with Acme Packet as they provide a leading solution – the secure, scalable and robust Net-Net Security Gateway – and relevant experience fulfilling stringent IP service delivery requirements.”

“ip.access is a small cell market leader with a broad product portfolio for enterprise and consumer markets,” explained Mark Vella, vice president of business development with Acme Packet. “This partnership combines small cell authority with security expertise to create a compelling and cost-effective solution to meet current and future service provider needs.”

Acme Packet is a silver sponsor of the ip.access 5th User Group taking place October 2nd in Dubai, UAE and October 11th-12th in London, UK.
